Funeral services for Betty Jean Rushton Veal, age 84, will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, December 23, 2015 in the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel of Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory, with interment to follow at Dublin Memorial Gardens. Reverend Chris Dixon will officiate.
Mrs. Veal was born on October 6, 1931 in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was the only child of the late Julian Milledge Rushton and Lucile Davis Rushton Bagwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Walter Veal, who was originally from Wrightsville, Georgia. She has lived in Dublin, Georgia since 1957 when she began her career as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital, where she later met her husband. She was retired from the former Laurens Memorial Hospital in Dublin and Fairview Park Hospital, where she was Head Nurse of the Surgical Unit on the Sixth Floor. She spent her life taking care of others and mentoring nurses. She had a very small immediate family, but had many friends and co-workers from Fairview Park who were close to her for her entire life.
She was a founding member of Liberty Baptist Church where she attended for the past 30 years. Mrs. Veal passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Serenity Place in Dublin, Georgia following an extended illness.
Mrs. Veal is survived by her two daughters, Melissa (Frank) Turner of Sea Island, Georgia and Delicia (Alan) Jett of Dexter, Georgia. She had four grandchildren – Kaitlyn Turner of Washington, DC, Franklin Turner of Sea Island, Georgia, Matt Jett of Pooler, Georgia and Cory Jett of Pooler, Georgia. She also has a first cousin she always referred to as a brother, Hugh Franklin Davis, of Blytheville, Arkansas.
Mrs. Veal's grandchildren were her pride and joy. She helped Kaitlyn register in Boston University where she began to pursue her legal career. She encouraged her grandson, Franklin, to pursue a medical career. She cherished Matt and Cory from the day they became part of her family and attended with great pride their recent weddings.
Pallbearers will be Tim Veal, Chester Veal, Tim Brantley, Ragan Green, Doug Hines, and Ralph Brown.
The family will receive friends from 12 pm until 1:45 pm on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at the funeral home preceding the ceremony.
