Funeral services for Donovan Baker Bell, Jr., DVM, age 91 will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 10, 2015 in the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel of Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory, with interment to follow at 3:30 P.M. at Milan City Cemetery. Rev. Tim Tharpe and Rev. Ed Bell will officiate.
Dr. Bell was born on November 20, 1923 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Donovan B. Bell, Sr. and Dessie Wise Bell. He was also preceded in death by his son, William Stephen Bell, and by his 2 sisters, Christine Bell Hughes, and Elizabeth Bell Hughes. Dr. Bell was a Army Veteran of World War II serving in France and Germany. After returning from the war, he completed his education at the University of Georgia in the school's first veterinary class, graduating in 1950. He practiced in Milan, Georgia until he moved to Dublin in 1994. At that time, he purchased Shamrock Veterinary Clinic and practiced there until his retirement in 2008. He continued to practice part time from his home until his death. During his career, he served as chairman of the Dodge County Hospital Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1981. He also served on the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine from 1983 to 1993, acting as chairman for two of those years.
He was a very dedicated veterinarian and had a great love for his "patients" and their owners. He loved all of his family and was especially proud of his seven grandchildren. Dr. Bell passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Fairview Park Hospital.
Dr. Bell is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Kight Bell of Dublin, 2 daughters, Laura Bell (Milton) Clements of Douglas, and Cynthia Ann Bell Smith of Andersonville, SC, a stepson, Kenny Dudley of Murfreesboro, TN, 2 brothers, George Edward Bell of Cordova, SC, and Jack Bell of Mechanicsburg, PA, a sister Mary Bell Griffin of Orangeburg, SC, 7 grandchildren, Brian Clements, Donovan Clements, Stephen Clements, Jonathan Smith, Jennifer Wells, Eva Dudley, and Brody Dudley, and 7 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Brian Clements, Donovan Clements, Stephen Clements, Jonathan Smith, Ronnie Mathis, Wally Spires, Jeff Hall, Donnie ONeal, and Skip Neal.
