Funeral services for Douglas Carl Metts, age 75 will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Marie Baptist Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Hutto will officiate.
Mr. Metts was born September 2, 1950, in Dublin, Georgia. He was the son of the late Urban Carl Metts and Jane Shearouse Metts. He was a member of Marie Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army Reserve and earned an outstanding trainee award during military training achieving a perfect score out of 10,000 reserves on a physical combat proficiency test. Doug graduated high school from Dublin High School in 1968 and was named MVP of the basketball team that finished state runner-up that same year. He played college basketball at Middle Georgia College and then went on to earn an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He completed his master’s from Georgia College and State University in administration. Doug devoted 40 years to education as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the head football coach at East Laurens High School from 1988-1993 where he led his team to a Region AA Championship in 1991. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Mr. Metts passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center.
Mr. Metts is survived by his wife, Wanda Hester Metts of Dublin; a son, Chan and Whitney Metts of Boone, NC; a daughter, Carla Metts of Charlotte, NC; 3 sisters, Sam Metts and Tom Harkleroad of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Lynn Metts and Phil Cronic of Dublin, and Gena Metts of Dublin; and 2 grandchildren, Everly Gebhart and Jhett Gebhart.
Pallbearers will be Chad Wyatt, Rex Woody, Dennis Holley, Joel Watson, Paul Hodges, and Daniel Hester.
Mr. Metts’s former coaches and players will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 20. 2026 at Marie Baptist Church.
Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/Dublin Chapel has charge of funeral arrangements.
