Funeral services for Mr. Fermon Lewis Rachels, age 89, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Richard Stanley Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Westview Cemetery. Rev. Randy Adams and Rev. Roger Holley will officiate.
Mr. Rachels was born July 14, 1927 in Wrightsville, Georgia; he was preceded in death by his parents, the late Homer & Mary Hughes Rachels. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Army. At the time of his retirement, at age 84, from the Georgia Department of Transportation as Trade Craftsman Supervisor, he was the oldest active employee in DOT history. He was a member of Brown Memorial Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon in 1962. He was a member of the American Legion Post #44 and was selected as Johnson County's Man of the Year in 1985. Mr. Rachels passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Carroll Rachels, a son, Charles Lewis (Karen) Rachels of Wrightsville, a daughter, Sharon Rachels (Joe) Stripp of Dublin, four grandchildren, Shanna Rachels of Monticello, Cassie (Brian) Kearney of Statesboro, Carla (Chris) Lewis of Dublin and Cory (Dee) Stripp of Dublin, three great-grandchildren, Noah Kearney, Addie Kearney and Chase Stripp, a sister-in-law, Mary (Ralph) Foskey of Swainsboro and two special nieces, Jo Ashcraft and Mary B. Pollett.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until funeral hour at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Shane Faircloth, Jerry Foskey, Brian Kearney, Chris Lewis, Jim Hemphill and Joey Ashcraft.
Honorary escorts will include, Cory Stripp, Joe Stripp, Gene Davis, Tommy Lovett, Jay Bell, Jimmy Cook, Beemon Keen, Jimmy Allen, Jo Ashcraft, Mary B. Pollett and Dale Brantley.
