Garnet C. "Kay" Richards Carter, age 74, passed away February 6, 2016 at Genesis Healthcare in Salem, West Virginia following an extended illness.
She was born in Salem March 11, 1941, the youngest daughter of Clifford and Bessie George Richards. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Ralph D. Carter; her stepson, Edd Carter; her sisters, Jean Yancey and Mildred "Mick" Hahn; her brothers-in-law, Howard Hahn, Lewis Yancey, Warren Fulton and Robert "Bob" Forrester.
She is survived by her sisters, Winona Forrester of Orlando, FL; and Ernestine Fulton of Clarksburg, WV; her brother, Robert (Melanie) Richards of Buckeye, AZ; her stepdaughter, Edie (Fred) Millan of Mesa, AZ; her sister-in-law, Glenda (Homer) Garnto of Scott; and her brother-in-law, Warren (Dale) Carter of Scott, GA.
Surviving nieces and nephews are: Howard (Zanette) Hahn, Doug (Donna) Hahn, L.W. (Terri) Yancey, Mike (Dianna) Yancey, Ross (Jean) Richards, Pam Richards, Traci (Nelson) Motley and Cliff (Marla) Fulton. Also surviving are dear friends – one being Mildred Carter of Scott who, with her late husband, Jimmie helped Kay in so many, many ways.
Kay graduated from Salem College, Salem, WV, and earned an Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. After 30 years of teaching, lastly in the math department of East Laurens High School, Dublin, GA, she retired from the Georgia school system.
After her marriage in 1969, she moved with her husband to his home in Scott where she resided for nearly 40 years until her health deteriorated and she moved back to West Virginia in 2009 to live with her sister, Ernee.
Kay was a very smart lady with a great sense of humor. She was an avid reader and, until Alzheimer's began its relentless attack, could usually debate either side of any issue. She was very athletic and competitive: she loved playing racquetball and tennis and excelled at both. She enjoyed cards and board games.
She had a soft heart for animals and contributed generously to the humane society.
She was a member of Brewton Baptist Church, Dublin, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel with Rev. Kelly Maddox officiating. Following the service, she will be buried beside her husband at Carter's Chapel United Methodist Church in Scott.
