Mrs. Glyenda Tanner Toler, the beloved wife of Jamey Toler and mother of Trey, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 following a very courageous battle against cancer.
She loved and lived for her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her faith in God was unwavering, and she had a deep desire to tell others about His goodness. She loved to pray and especially pray for others and their requests. She selflessly gave of herself to show the goodness and faithfulness of God to any person bringing a need to her.
Mrs. Toler, a lifelong resident of Wrightsville and Johnson County, GA, was the daughter of James Roy, Sr. and Ida Pearl Beasley Tanner. Educated in the Johnson County School system, she very early on discovered she had a God given gift in academics. Graduating from Johnson County High School with the class of 1983, she earned the distinction of class valedictorian and Star Student among many others. She continued her education in college by attending and graduating from Georgia Southern College in 1987.
Following her college graduation, she returned to her beloved Johnson County High School and began her career as an educator. Finding and flourishing in her calling as a high school teacher she touched the lives of many young people academically and in life. It has been said that she could open doors to learning for students in subjects where they had struggled before having her as a teacher.
JOCO students from the late 90's to early 2000's will remember her as a technology instructor and for her production of the weekly "Trojan News" broadcasts within the school. She instructed and led the students to produce their own video news reports for many years. In 2000 she and her students received nationwide attention from the national Channel One News (a newscast broadcast exclusively to schools around the country) for a profile of Johnson County's head football coach, Bill Bonds. Their production won first place while competing against hundreds of other schools from around the country.
She spent 30 years fulfilling her calling in public education and was blessed to finish her career by teaching math at East Laurens High School. There she touched countless more students with her caring personality. Her peers voted her as their teacher of the year in 2016 and the school and county system leaders supported her endlessly throughout her cancer fight.
While she was always very fulfilled in her chosen career path, she was most satisfied by her work in her church. As a member of Oaky Grove Church, she stood alongside Pastor Tom Akins to support the expansion of his God given vision for the church and the community. Her commitment extended to supporting Pastor's wife, Gina and his family & included her work in the church's Sunday School, music and media ministries.
Her service and commitment to the church ultimately expanded to the entire youth department upon her marriage to Jamey when the church called him as Youth Pastor/Worship leader. She stood beside, supported and loved her husband tirelessly in every aspect of his ministry and his life.
Her love and devotion was unwavering. In addition to wife her most dearly held title would be that of "mama" upon the birth of her precious baby boy, Trey in 2008. She mothered him with such patience and tenderness. As soon as Trey was able to speak he kept her busy creating various arts and crafts projects for him. He would instruct and she would create. She loved every minute of it.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Roy Tanner, Sr. and an infant sister, Vickie Leigh Tanner.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jamey Toler and her precious son, Trey Toler, both of Wrightsville; her mother Ida Pearl Beasley Tanner, of Wrightsville; her twin brother, Glynn Tanner (Tabatha), of Wrightsville; her older brother, James Tanner (Angela), of Wrightsville; her mother-in-law, Angie Dickens, of Adrian; her father-in-law, Edwin Toler (Glenda), of Soperton; her sister-in-law, Jennifer Maddox (Josh), of Soperton; and special nephews and nieces along with many dear aunts and cousins.
