Col. Moore was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon H. and Thelma (Queenie)
Moore, Atlanta, GA.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gloria Daniel Moore, daughter Debbie (John)
Keegan, Duluth, GA,, son David (Shari) Moore, Palm Bay, FL., step-son, David Crabb
(Marilyn),Conyers, GA, grandchildren, Joshua Crabb, London, England, Lindsey
Cowan, Las Vegas, Nev., Brett Crabb, Cartersville, GA, Shawn Moore, Merritt Island,
FL, Jeni Young, Jacksonville, FL, Clifton Hummel-Young (Stephanie), Marion, AR,,
Jason Young, Jacksonville, FL, great-grandchildren Shelby and Jaycie Young,
Jacksonville, FL, Lilly and Issac Hummel-Young, Marion, AR, sister Elaine Hayes,
Kingsland, GA and nephew, Joseph (Gayle) Hayes, Kingsland, GA.
Col. Moore was a trustee at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the
Atlanta Federation of Musicians, a member of the American Legion, a Mason and a
Shriner. He was a professional musician. After graduating from Bass High School in
Atlanta he served 4 years active duty in the U.S. Air Force and 25 years with the 530th
Air National Guard Band, the last several years as Commander. He was very proud of his
twenty-nine years of military service. It gave him an opportunity to serve his country
doing something he loved.
He was a percussionist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for 12 years. He taught
instrumental music in the Atlanta School System for 25 years. He taught thousands of
students to play and appreciate music.
Russell was the drummer for the Wits End Players and the Atlanta Pops for over 40
years. In addition he played for numerous Broadway shows that came to Atlanta and
celebrities such as Bob Hope, Red Skelton and Flip Wilson.
After retiring he brought his wife home to her beloved Laurens County and immediately
went to the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center to volunteer. He and his wife volunteered
there for eight years until he lost the vision in his right eye. He said helping our veterans
was the most rewarding thing he had ever done.
Honorary pallbearers are the men of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, John Head,
Cecil Welch, the members of the 530th Air National Guard Band and the members of
Whiteford Masonic Lodge.
Col. Moore's family appreciates the excellent care he received from the staff of Serenity
Hospice.
