Irene Mays, 91, passed on to glory on September 11, 2016. She was a member of Marie Baptist Church. Services will be at Marie Baptist Church on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 with visitation at 10 am and services to follow at 11 am.
She was born in Cleveland, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents Dewitt Crane and Onnie Farmer Crane. She was also preceded in death by her sisters and brothers Vanilla (George) Harkins, Myrtlene (Monroe) Winters, Florene (Clarence) McFarland, D.W. (Margie) Crane, Jr, Lewis (Ann) Crane and her late husband, Roscoe Mays, Jr.
She attended trade school in Dahlonega, GA and learned to weld. She moved to Brunswick, GA and was there during World War II working at the ship yards where she participated at the lauching of the ship, SS Samaustral on April 28th, 1944. She later moved to Ashburn, GA and was married to the late Clarence Jones, who was the father to her surviving children.
She enjoyed helping others. She went to Nursing Homes with a church group to teach Sunday School. She also delivered Meals on Wheels along with two of her best buddies, Emily Hobbs and Amee McKinley. She had a green thumb and loved working in her flower gardens.
Her survivors are her daughter, Belinda Jones Deese, Dublin, GA and two sons, Jerry M. Jones, Dublin, GA and Hugh (Janet) Jones of Cumming, GA, two granddaughters, Lori Braswell, Watkinsville, GA and Kristi Braswell, Madison, WI, three great grandchildren, Jackson Knecht, James Knecht, and Kayla De Meyer, two sisters, Shirley (Sidney) Truelove and Polly (Lyle) Marvetz, of Gainsville, GA and her constant side kick, her cat of 18 years, Autumn, that will miss her greatly.
