Irene "Renie" Hart Cordell, age 58, left earth for Heaven on July 21, 2020 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was born on Sunday, February 25, 1962, in Athens, Georgia, at Athens General Hospital - present day, Athens Piedmont Regional - at 6:37a.m. by Dr. Ellis Dixon. Dr. Dixon announced that Renie was the most beautiful baby girl he'd ever delivered, and he was grateful he did not have to miss Sunday School.
Renie leaves behind her beloved children, Katherine Hart Dixon and James Jackson Dixon of Dublin, and Charles Bryan Dixon III of Duluth; the light of her world, her grandson, Alex Nicholas Dixon; daughter-in-loves Taylor Elizabeth Turner (Jack) and Alix Kathryn Tarpley (Bryan); and son-in-love, Jeremy Carter (Katie). She will be forever missed by her parents, Howard and Irene Cordell of Dublin; her sister Jennie Cordell, her brother and sister-in-law Lindsey and Beth Cordell of Rome, Georgia, nieces Caroline and Allie, and nephew, Lindsey; her sister and brother-in-law, Nora and Rolando Almazan, niece Collier Hatchett Collier, her spouse Chris and daughter Sarah Catherine; niece Hart Hatchett Almazan, and her husband Titus Almazan; niece Dory Hatchett; nephew Bo Hatchett, his wife Ashley, and two children Hallie and Hazel; nephew Ben Hatchett, his son, Bo Hatchett; and nephew Will Hatchett. Other family members who will miss her tremendously are her Aunt and friend Betty Cordell, Logan and wife Libby Hurt; great-nieces and nephews: Owen Almazan, Mila, Max and Myles Almazan, and Denis and Amanda Almazan.
Renie graduated from Dublin High School in 1980 where she was a Fighting Irish Cheerleader and the 1980 Homecoming Queen. Renie was the 1980 "Miss St. Patricks" and held countless other pageant titles. She attended the University of Georgia, pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. Renie was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and was the Kappa Sigma Sweetheart of 1983. She established residence in New York after graduation and worked as a Model and Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines. In 1988, Renie returned to Atlanta and lived there until she returned to her hometown of Dublin, Georgia, in 2003.
For several years, Renie worked in television and radio. As an advocate of children, Renie devoted her time to CASA. She received her BS in nursing and worked as an Emergency Room nurse, travel nurse, and later a nurse for the Carl Vinson Veterans Administration in Dublin. In typical Renie fashion, she became a huge advocate for Veterans. Her patients loved her, and she loved them. Because of her devotion, she was named to the Georgia Board of Nursing by Gov. Brian Kemp. It was an accomplishment Renie valued and looked forward to working to better healthcare for all Georgians.
There are many words to describe Renie: feisty, dynamic, full-of-life, determined...but the one that resonates the most, through and through, is devoted - to her children, her grandson, her family, her friends, her patients, her country and her God. She wanted what was best for the ones she loved, and her fighting spirit made those around her know - she would never give up on the people she loved. Renie did not wait to plan her life - she created her life by living it, by serving others, by standing side-by-side with people, and by loving God.
If asked how she wanted to be remembered, Renie would say, "Remembered? I am not gone! As long as you speak my name - I am always with you." Her name will be spoken for many lifetimes. And so dear Renie, you will never be gone as long as we have words to speak and ears to hear.
