Funeral services for James Roy Rowland, Jr., MD, age 96, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 29, 2022, at Pine Forest United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville. Rev. Wes Moye and Dr. Joel Dent will officiate. Dr. Rowland was born February 3, 1926, in Wrightsville, Georgia, the son the late James Roy Rowland Sr. and Jerradine Brinson Rowland. A graduate of Wrightsville High School, J. Roy attended Emory University before enlisting in the Army during World War II. On August 3, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart Luella Price. After the war he pursued his dream of being a medical doctor. He earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1952 and practiced medicine in Dublin for 28 years. J. Roy was elected to the Georgia State House of Representatives in 1976 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. He was a member of Pine Forest Methodist Church. Dr. Rowland passed away Monday, April 25, 2022, at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years Luella Price Rowland of Dublin, son James (Jim) Roy Rowland, III (Kemberly) of Dublin, two daughters Mary Lou Rowland (Neal) of Dublin, and Jane Carol Rowland of Statesboro, five grandchildren Robert James Neal, Jason Chafin, Chad Roy Neal, James Roy Rowland, IV, and Chris Rowland, and four great grandchildren Alwyn Neal, Kyra Neal, Hannah Chafin and Connor Chafin.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 P.M. to 1:45 P.M. at the church.
Pallbearers will be Tom Perry, Dr. Monty Shuman, Dr. Steve Garner, Frank Fields, Scott Beasley and Bill Stembridge. Honorary pallbearers will be Shelby McCash, Jim Comerford, Dr. Nelson Carswell, Jr., Dr. James A. Kibler, Jerry Gay, George Durden, Judge Dudley Bowen, James Hutcheson, Judge Mike Boggs and Dahlia Allen
