Funeral services for Mr. James Monroe "Jimmy" Cook, Jr., age 90, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Brown Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Adams officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Westview Cemetery.
Mr. Cook was born on December 8, 1930 in Dublin, Georgia. Jimmy was the son of the late James Monroe Cook and Annie Mae King Cook. Jimmy graduated in 1947 at the age of 16 from Wrightsville High as the valedictorian of his class. He spent the next four years as a cadet at North Georgia College. He was one of six Distinguished Military Graduates to receive their regular army commission as a second lieutenant. He spent five years on active duty during and after the Korean war. While on active duty he received the Army Commendation Medal for Exemplary Service. On his return to Wrightsville to work with his father in the family business, he joined the Georgia National Guard and served for an additional 25 years, rising to the rank of Colonel. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the rank of Brig. General by the Georgia National Guard.
Jimmy was a successful businessman operating Cook Furniture & Electric for over 40 years serving as the President of the Georgia Home Furnishing Association in 1991. During his work career in Wrightsville he served on the Wrightsville City Council, the Wrightsville Centennial Committee, the Johnson County Bi- Centennial Committee and the Committee to restore the Courthouse. He held offices in the Lions Club and helped build the doctors' office attracting a doctor to Johnson County. He retired in 1998 to spend nearly 68 years with the love of his life, Mary Shearouse Cook.
He was a faithful member and Deacon Emeritus of Brown Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Cook passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at The Orchard at Athens.
Mr. Cook is survived by his loving wife, Mary Shearouse Cook of Athens, James M. (Bucky) & Shelley Cook, IV, of Statham, and his daughter, Neil and Anne Cook McCollum of Statham, and 4 grandchildren, Hutch McCollum, Dave & Caroline McCollum, Sally and Anthony Monico and Jack Cook.
