James Brinson Norris

South Augusta recently lost one of its finest longtime residents. James Brinson Norris passed away at home on Tuesday, July 11, with family closely watching over his final moments.


Born on November 11, 1928 in Johnson County, he was the third of four children blessed to the union of Augustus Brinson Norris and Thelma Miley Beasley. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings and the love of his life...Betty Ann (New) Norris.

Mr. Norris is survived by his only child Terry Norris (Christie), granddaughter Maggie Dentler (Christopher) and grandson Tyler Norris (Jennifer). He was also so proud of his four great grandsons (Trysten Norris, Jaxon Norris, Hayes Norris and Cohen Dentler) and one great granddaughter (Teagen Dentler). He is also survived by his beloved sister-in-law, Patricia (New) Helmly of Savannah.


Mr. Norris was employed for over 34 years by the E. I. DuPont Company at the Savannah River Plant retiring in 1987. He had previously served in the US Navy after graduating from Wrightsville High School in 1946.


Known to his many friends and family as Papa, Big Papa, Mr. Jimmy, Jimmy, Jim, Jimbo, Uncle Jimbo, JB, Thunder, Tiger and Nudge-um...he was an original member of the Green Meadows Country Club and active in many other local organizations. His commitment to his community was unquestionable as shown through sought after memberships on the Richmond County Board of Elections, the Richmond County Board of Tax Assessors, the Georgia Board of Consumers Affairs and the Georgia Police Corps Selection Board.


The family will be honored to visit with Mr. Jimmy's friends and family on Thursday, July 13 from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Elliott Sons Funeral Home located at 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, GA 30906 and again on Friday, July 14 at 10 AM in the chapel of the Stanley Family Funeral Home, 8580 S Marcus Street, Wrightsville, GA 31096. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 14 at 11:00 AM at Stanley Funeral Home. His nephew, Reverend Robert Rogers of Dublin, GA will lead the service. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in Wrightsville.


Sheriff Greg Rowland of Johnson County, Dr. Freddie Cullens, DVM of Washington County, Mr. Wayne Jackson of Richmond County, Mr. Trysten Norris of Columbia County, Mr. Tyler Norris of Columbia County and Mr. Terry Norris of Morgan County will serve as pallbearers. Georgia's 159 elected sheriffs will serve as honorary pallbearers.


The family wishes to express their most sincere appreciation to the staff of Nuclear Care Partners and also Enhabit Home Health and Hospice who provided exceptional care and support.


In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be offered to the Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes, Inc. at 1000 Sheriffs Way, Madison, GA or through an online gift at www.georgiasheriffsyouth.org/tribute.


Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/Wrightsville Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
