James "Jimmy" Truett

April 17, 1941 — January 30, 2023

James Edward "Jimmy" Truett, age 81, went to his heavenly home Monday, January 30th at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living Center, Dublin, Ga., after an extended illness.


He was a native of Montgomery County and was a 1959 graduate of Montgomery County, where he received many awards for his outstanding achievements in sports. He attended Brewton-Parker with a baseball scholarship, where he graduated and was inducted into the Brewton-Parker Hall of Fame.


He earned a degree from Georgia Southern University and began his teaching career in Soperton where he coached football and baseball. Jimmy loved the "Class of 69" students at Treutlen County. They had a special bond for a lifetime with "COACH TRUETT!!"


He also earned a degree from Johnson City (Tennessee) College.


After retiring Jimmy went to work for the Laurens County Health Department in the Environmental Health Department where he served the public in Laurens County and 10 surrounding counties. He helped write the Hurricane Evacuation Program; taught seat belt safety to law enforcement, the Governors Program of Seat Belt Safety, the Safe Kids of Georgia program; and started the Vince and Larry Crash Dummies Demonstrations all over middle Georgia high schools.


He was a member of Buckeye Christian Church of Johnson County and he also attended Ivey Baptist Church, where he enjoyed boxing up supplies often to send to the soldiers in Afghanistan.


He loved little children and all children. He enjoyed reading, and was an avid reader, until he lost his eyesight. He loved to hunt, fish and enjoyed all the outdoor sports, especially the Tanner-Hobby 1st day of dove season events with all the children!


He was a big man full of love and compassion for his family and friends, and coworkers. He will be missed greatly by all that knew him.


Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Fredrick Truett and Annie Doris Smith Truett of Mt. Vernon; his sister, June Conner; his daughter, Cindy Truett Clark; and precious nephew, Tony Truett.


Jimmy leaves his wife of 32 years, Vickey Walker Truett of East Dublin; a daughter, Christy Truett Cone (Derek); a grandson, Tristan Noah Cone; stepson Gregg Moorman, Jr.; stepdaughter, Deidre Moorman Byrd; brother, Charles Truett (Loretta) of Uvalda; sister, Joy Truett Tootle of Mt. Vernon; brother-in-law, Tommy Walker (Cathy) of East Dublin; and his lifelong friend, Tommy Craft. Also, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and his special fur babies, Lady and Dolly.


Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 1, 2023, in the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel of Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Simon Yoder and Rev. Hank Melton officiating. Burial will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. to 2:45 P.M. at the funeral home prior to the service.


Pallbearers will be Willis Wombles, Chad Wombles, Randy Tanner, Hunter Tanner, Travis Craft, Tim Craft, Ray Yoder and Mark Yoder. Honorary pallbearers will Dr. Kirkland Kolbie, Tommy Craft, Sr, Dr. Jim Hobby, Jake Hobby, Phillip Cadwell, Howard Stephenson, Charles Sutton, Lamont Craft and the Soperton graduating class of 1969.


A special group at Twelve Oaks were so very much appreciated: angel nurses: Martha, Leah, Barbara, Myiah, Lecretia; Atrium health angels nurses, Jeanne, Tiffany, Rachel, Rashita; the hospice angel nurses and the administrator, Ken Schrader.
