Madge Lake Smith

December 27, 1919 — July 20, 2016

Funeral services for Madge Lake Smith, age 96 will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, July 22, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Westview Cemetery. Rev. Kirk Hagan, Rev. Greg Lowery will officiate. Mrs. Smith was born on December 27, 1919 in Wrightsville, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Horace H. and Blanche Wilson Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Smith, a grandson, Joel Smith, a son-in-law, Bill Thomas, sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha and William Flanders, Patsy and Dick Porter, and Sarah Lake, and 2 brothers, Lynn Lake, and Wallace (Bette) Lake. She has lived in Wrightsville until two years ago. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a life –long member of the First United Methodist Church of Wrightsville. She was a retired Johnson County Tax Commissioner, and also worked at the Johnson County Training Center, and earlier as a teacher's aide. Mrs. Smith passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Serenity Place. She was a faithful, family-oriented lady who showered her family with love, devotion and laughter. An example of that total and absolute support for her children was the 25-CONSECUTIVE-YEARS she and her husband off 44 year, J. D., were Band Booster parents in Wrightsville. If her children were in it, they attended it. If her grandchildren were in it, they were there. An avid gardener, she loved flowers, and working in her yard. And as recently as 6 weeks ago she was on her riding lawn mower cutting grass in her yard. She instilled the love of reading into her children. As she always said, she traveled the world through books and taught them to do the same. To her, whatever you wanted to achieve was possible through hard work and discipline and she supported her children unwaveringly in whatever they chose to pursue. She will be deeply and forever missed by her friends and family. Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Noel (Jumelia) Smith of Blairsville, three daughters, Judy Thomas of Dublin, Lisa (Bill) Turner of Chattanooga, TN, and Becky (Woody) Tarpley of Dublin, a sister, Vida McKim of Savannah, 6 grandchildren, Andrea Smith, Kenneth Smith, Kymberly (Greg) Lowery, Lindsey Brown, Adam (Christie) Tarpley, and Alix Tarpley, and 1 great-grandchild, Brittany (Tim) Rumph. Pallbearers will be Kenny Flanders, Carl Stanley, Stuart Stanley, Michael McKim, Rollin McKim, Jr., and Mark McKim. The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until 3:45 P.M. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Smith to the Wrightsville First Untied Methodist Church at 2497 West Elm Street, Wrightsville, GA 31096 or to Serenity Place at 504 Parker Dairy Road, Dublin, GA 31021.
