Funeral services for Martha Louisa Lake Flanders, age 99, will be held on June 1st at at 11:00 AM, Wrightsville First United Methodist Church, Wrightsville, GA, with Reverend Thad Haygood, Reverend David Haygood and Reverend Kirk Hagen officiating. A graveside service will follow at Wrightsville Cemetery.
Mrs. Flanders, who passed away May 28, 2016, was born September 29, 1916 at her family home between Wrightsville and Dublin where she lived most of her life. She was the second of seven children born to Horace H. and Blanche Wilson Lake. Following the untimely death of her mother, she assumed, at age 13, the household responsibilities and care of her younger siblings, ranging in age from 3 to 10.
She attended public schools in Lovett and Brewton, GA and was graduated from Wrightsville High School. She married Mr. William Flanders of Wrightsville who passed away in2007.
As a longtime, active member of the Wrightsville First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Flanders taught various Sunday School classes and participated in Methodist women organizations, serving as Dublin District President of the Women's Society of Christian Service (later called United Methodist Women) from 1959 to 1964.
Mrs. Flanders was a homemaker who loved people and she had many friends, including those at Benton House of Dublin where she resided most recently. Family and friends remember her as an excellent cook and as an avid reader, known by local librarians as a steady patron through the years.
Mrs. Flanders was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of seventy years; by siblings Lynn M. Lake, Wallace M. Lake, Patsy Lake Porter and Sarah Clifford Lake.
She is survived by her children, William Kenneth "Ken" (Jewel) Flanders and Blanche Flanders Farley, both of Dublin, by sisters Madge Lake Smith and Vida Lake McKim; grandchildren, Susan Farley Rogers and Jennifer Flanders (Scott) Thigpen; great grandchildren, Hailey Rogers and Grant, Callie and Caroline Thigpen and by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at Stanley Funeral Home in Wrightsville on May 31st from 6 to 8 PM.
