Graveside funeral services for Martha Claxton Hill, age 90 will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, November 20, 2023, at Kite City Cemetery. Rev. Burton Dixon will officiate.
Mrs. Hill was born January 4, 1933, in Dublin, Georgia and spent her childhood in Kite, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late James Ellis Claxton and DeAlvah Grace Wheeler Claxton. She was a graduate of Napsonian School in Atlanta, Georgia in May of 1949. She met the love of her life, Charles William Hill, while attending Mercer University and they married in their junior year of college. Martha was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority while attending Mercer where she graduated in 1953 and started her teaching career in Macon while Charles attended Walter F. George School of Law. Once Charles completed law school in 1956, they moved to Albany, Georgia where she continued her teaching career. She taught third grade for 30 years retiring from the Dougherty County School System in 1984. She was an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa educational sorority during and after her teaching career.
Charles and Martha were married for 55 years when Charles passed away in 2006. She was a member of multiple genealogical organizations such as Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812 and First Families of Georgia. Over the years, she held many offices and was actively involved with all.
She has been an active member of First Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia since 1956. Mrs. Hill passed away Friday, November 17, 2023, in Macon, Georgia. Mrs. Hill is survived by her two daughters, DeAlvah "Dee" Elizabeth Hill Simms (Howard) of Macon, and Martha Charlene Hill Craig (Sandy) of Newnan, and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Simms Martin (Jason), Howard Zachary Simms, Jr., Charles Colson Craig, and Clayton Claxton Craig.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Kite First Baptist Church, 134 Ga Hwy 57, Kite, GA 31049 or the First Baptist Church of Albany, 145 Oakland Parkway, Leesburg, GA 31763.
