Funeral services for Mattie Manning Thomas, 92, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Jefferson Street Baptist Church with burial to follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. Rev. Kyle Giddens, Rev. Darren Talley and Rev. Kenny Thompson will officiate.
Mrs. Thomas was born on November 8, 1929, in Cedar Grove, Georgia She is preceded in death by her parents Otha Lee and Eva Camilla Ward Manning; her husband Robert Wendell Thomas, Sr.; her son Robert Wendell Thomas, Jr.; her daughter-in-law Donna Colquitt Thomas, and her grandson Jason Brooks. Also preceding her in death were seven of her siblings: Troy Manning, Curtis Manning, Gurvis Manning, Doris Long, Lillie Schraut, Myrtice Jolly, and Alene Bryant.
"Miss" Mattie left her earthly residence on the morning of July 22, 2022, and after making two brief stops at the emergency rooms of Fairview Park Hospital and Augusta University Medical Center throughout the day, she passed away peacefully to her heavenly home that night with two of her children by her side.
Upon graduation from Dudley High School Mrs. Thomas attended West Georgia College in Carrollton. Soon after that she married Mr. Thomas and started her family. When their children were older, she worked at the Shirt Factory. Mrs. Thomas then worked at JP Stevens in the Nathaniel Plant-Burling and Mending. Continuing her work at that same site that became Forstmann, she served as a laboratory technician and served there at Stevens/Forstmann for twenty plus years up to her retirement. Following retirement, she enjoyed her service as a secretary at Bethsaida Baptist Church.
Early in her marriage, she became a dedicated member of Centerville Baptist Church where she wrote the history of the church and served in various roles including superintendent of VBS. In 1968, she and her family moved to Jefferson Street Baptist Church where she was an active member serving on the Youth Committee, Sunday school teacher, a helper in the children's choir program, Cane and Able Choir, and a very faithful member of her Sunday School class serving in various leadership roles. She enjoyed the trips with the seniors of the church on many occasions.
Other areas of "Miss" Mattie's service included volunteering as a "pink lady" at Fairview Park Hospital, at the Salvation Army, and distributing church materials to the shut-ins of JSBC. She was an involved and dedicated member of the Band Boosters at Dublin High School from 1968 – 1982 being that she had four children who were very active in the marching bands and concert bands at DHS.
As quoted by a friend, "She was so loved by all who knew her." A faithful friend to many – she loved her family, friends, church family, and especially her grandchildren-- They brought so much joy to her.
She is survived by her sons Danny (Misty) Thomas of Dublin, Verlyn (Faye) Thomas of Dudley, Bruce (Dianne) Thomas of Farmington, her daughter Robyn (Bennie) Bridges of Dublin, a sister Lorene Carter of Alma, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Grandchildren: Julia (Matthew) Mosley, Wendell Cody (Shellie) Thomas, Caleb Thomas, Mary Hannah Thomas, Olivia Thomas, Chilor Thomas, Brinson Thomas, Jon Paul Thomas, Camille Thomas, Eva Grace Thomas, Victory Thomas, Wendy Brooks, and Brandi (Glynn) Petrie. Great grandchildren: Mattison Mosley, Remington Mosley, Dylan Warren, Lane Brooks, Tristan Brooks, Addy Grace Petrie, Jase Petrie, and Kendyl Petrie.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory and on Saturday, August 13, 2022, from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. at Jefferson Street Baptist Church.
Floral arrangements will be accepted in Mrs. Thomas' memory and/or memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 329, Palmetto, GA 30268
Pallbearers will be Greg Outlaw, Tim Outlaw, Brinson Thomas, Caleb Thomas, Chilor Thomas, Cody Thomas and Jon Paul Thomas.
Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/Dublin Chapel are overseeing the funeral arrangements.
