Maudie Lee Claxton Killingsworth McLendon passed away peacefully on Friday, March 31st. "Mrs. Maudie," as she was affectionately known, was ninety-nine years old.
Mrs. Maudie was born March 2, 1918 in Kite, Georgia to Rilla Kight Claxton and John Ezra Claxton. She was the granddaughter of Zilphia Anderson Claxton and William I. Claxton.
She married James Allen Killingsworth on January 8, 1939. James Allen died on November 5, 1956. She married Julian Leonard McLendon on December 26, 1959. Julian Leonard died October 28, 1999.
Mrs. Maudie graduated from Kite High School. She attended Hampton Roads Business College and worked at the Mica Company of Canada, Ltd. in Newport News, Virginia. She was employed at J.C. Penney Company in Dublin, Georgia for 19 years.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as warden and worthy matron. She was a member of Blue Water Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Laurens County Historical Society Museum. Family was most important to Mrs. Maudie and she seldom missed a Claxton reunion, serving for many years as Secretary/Treasurer and a member of the Table Committee, Program Committee and Nominating Committee. Mrs. Maudie lived her life according to the Claxton family motto, "Faithful Ever Faithful."
Mrs. Maudie was preceded in death by her precious son in love, Larry McLendon, brothers Eddie Claxton, Albert Claxton, Clifford Claxton, and sisters Bessie Claxton, Pauline Claxton, and Ruby Claxton.
Mrs. Maudie is survived by her daughter, Dixie Lousue Killingsworth Evans (Henry Clyde) of Dublin, Georgia. She is also survived by a precious daughter in love, Dorothy McLendon Cafferty (Paul) of Quitman, Arkansas, three grandchildren, Brent Allen Evans (Lydia) of Macon, Ashley Todd Evans (Meredith) of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Katrina Evans Gatti (Paul) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and two granddaughters in love, Diane McLendon Gainforth (Randy) and Julie McLendon Floen (Dan) of Bradenton, Florida. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, two great-granddaughters in love and one great-great granddaughter.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 3rd from 5-7 p.m. at Stanley Funeral Home/Dublin Chapel, 1320 North Jefferson Street, Dublin, Georgia. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 4th at 2 p.m. at Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church, Swain Creek Road, Kite, Georgia with burial to follow in Gumlog Cemetery. Reverend Grady Mimbs, Reverend Gene Hemingway, and Mrs. Maudie's nephew John W. Mixon will officiate.
