Maxine Carey, age 86, passed away Monday, February 16, 2026, after a sudden illness.
Ms. Carey was born January 31, 1940, in Hazlehurst, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Hugh Wilson and Daisy Brooks Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, John F. Britt and Howard “Pete” Warren, and a sister, JoAnn Smith.
She was a homemaker who had a deep love for her family, and she cherished each of them immensely. She showed expressions of her love by cooking for her family and having them over to share a meal together. She loved flowers and watching sunsets. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. She made many special and beautiful afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Liberty Church.
Ms. Carey is survived by her son, John Russell Britt (Julie) of Peachtree City; a daughter, Melinda Lewis Carr of Dublin; 4 grandchildren, John Russell Britt, Jr. (Ashton), Nichole Strickland (Lee), Dana Hall (Clay), Christina Hibbs (Taylor); and 5 great-grandchildren, Dawson Strickland, Joanna Strickland, Leah Hall, Kinsley Hall, and Sterling Britt.
Ms. Carey will be memorialized by her wishes at a private family service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the charity of your choice or to Soul (Serving Others Unconditional Love/link provided) a non-profit that was near and dear to Maxine’s heart, as it was founded at UGA by her granddaughter, Christina. www.servingsoul.org
