Rev. Gerald J. Metzdorf went home to be with his Lord Saturday, January 15, 2022, at the age of 80.
He was born in Anderson, Indiana on June 20, 1941, but grew up in Orlando, FL. He was one of identical twins born to Arthur L. Metzdorf and Lillian June Tucker Metzdorf. He graduated from Florida Military School and served in the United States Air Force. Jerry received a Bachelor of Science in Bible-Theology from Toccoa Falls College, Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Clinical Pastoral Education Diploma from Central State Hospital.
He was an ordained Southern Baptist Minister pastoring Toomsboro Baptist Church in Wilkinson County for 3 years. However, God had other plans for Jerry and led him to his true calling when he was hired as the Clinical Chaplain at Dodge Correctional Institute in 1982; he served there for 7 years eventually moving to Reidsville Correctional where he served until he retired in 2001.
Jerry was married for 58 years to his loving wife Ann Yvonne Stallings Metzdorf. They had 6 children Michael Arthur (Danene) Metzdorf of Ashland, Gregory Allan Metzdorf of Ashville, NC, Brian Andrew (Kimberly) Metzdorf of Lawrenceville, Timothy Adam (Margie) Metzdorf of Dublin, Pamela Ann (James) Hammock of Savannah, and Kathrine Annette (Jason) Thomas of Dublin. From these unions they were blessed with 13 grandchildren, Aaron Metzdorf, Olivia (Anton) Smith, Elyse (Danny) DeBrincat, Trevor Metzdorf, Connor Metzdorf, Shayna Metzdorf, Lauryn Metzdorf, Dyllan Metzdorf, Evan Thomas, Kaitlin Thomas, Ian Thomas, Trip Hammock and Bo Hammock.
Jerry is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Carolyn Metzdorf, his in laws and brothers-in-law, Rodney and Joe Stallings.
Our lives were blessed by having Jerry as our husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed, but we know he is with his Heavenly Father and the many who have gone before him. We look forward to the day we see him again.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Marie Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Hutto officiating with burial to follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Michael Metzdorf, Gregory Metzdorf, Brian Metzdorf, Timothy Metzdorf, Jason Thomas and James Hammock.
