Robert Leonard "Bob" Helgren passed away suddenly on February 15, 2021 at the age of 91 at Fairview Hospital in Dublin, Georgia. He was born on January 15, 1930 in Traverse City, Michigan and was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Mathias and Rena Ellen (Nelson) Helgren and his sister, Mary Helgren Hodges.
After graduating from Ludington High School in Ludington, Michigan in 1948, he enlisted in the US Army and proudly served until his retirement in 1968. A decorated veteran of the Korean War, he later was a proud member of the elite 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) "Green Berets"deployed to the Flint Kaserne, Bad Tolz, Germany.
Following his military retirement he returned to Savannah, Georgia to help manage the family business, Stephens Motor Supply Co. , until it's closing. He was then employed by the US Postal Service in Dublin, GA until his retirement.
An avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, he was an outstanding marksman, skeet shooter, and proud owner and trainer of champion field trial Labrador retrievers, especially his beloved "Rosie".
He was a member of the Larry Thorne Special Forces Memorial Chapter XXXIII, the DAV, the NRA and member and Sunday school teacher at the Mt. Olive Church of the Nazarene in Adrian, Ga where he lived until 2018.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Helgren Janicak (Dan) of St Marys, GA and Mary Ellen Helgren of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Katherine Clausen Harris Haight (David) of Plymouth, MN, Stephen Raymond Harris of Amelia Island, FL and Elizabeth Beebe Hampton (Charles) of St Marys, GA.; great grandchildren Reagan Elizabeth Haight and Harrison David Haight of Plymouth, MN .; nieces Shirley Hodges Walker ( Garey) of Carlisle, PA and Susan Hodges Cooler of Raleigh, NC.; and numerous grandnieces and nephews.
Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/ Wrightsville Chapel is in charge of the arrangements and a graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 12:30 P.M. at Mt. Olive Church of the Nazarene Cemetery with Rev. Rick Tooley officiating. Remembrances may by made to Disabled American Veterans or the Wounded Warrior Project.
